I've been taking photos since I was ten, which makes it 30-plus years now. It's always been the thing I come back to.

Photography wasn't always my job, though. Before this I was opening hotels, working on the design and fit-out and getting them from plans to open doors. That's where I got to work with all kinds of makers: joiners, stonemasons, metalworkers, upholsterers, people who make the stuff that turns a building into a place. I saw how much skill and care goes into work most people walk past without noticing.

When I made photography my full-time job, I started out shooting architecture and spaces, and I've been doing it commercially for about five years. My work has been published and shortlisted in a couple of international competitions. But I keep getting pulled back to the makers. These days that's what I love shooting most: the workshop, the process, the people, and the finished piece they're proud of.

I've been in Canberra for 12 years. It's a great place to raise a family, and it's full of small businesses doing seriously good work.

The business is small on purpose. I'm at every shoot, even when someone from my team is on the camera, because you should be dealing with a real person who actually cares about your work.
